Alum Creek Sunrise
Yellowstone National Park
September 25, 2003

Once again out well before the crack of dawn (before even the muffled thump of dawn) and on our way to shoot sunrise at Alum creek. But, the best laid plans of mice and photographers often are screwed up by the construction crews who rip up random roads through the park in the fall. We were stopped a mere three miles from the creek and watched in anguish as the sky filled with pink clouds. Half an hour later the color was gone, and the road crew let us drive on. We made it to the creek just as the sun started to peek over the horizon and it was a mad scramble down to the banks to set up for this shot. In the best of conditions, fog covers the creek and gives this shot a mysterious look, but I kinda like the sepia tone of the backlit trees myself.
