Baodingshan Grottos
Dazu, China
March 13, 2003
One of the final stops of the tour was to see the Buddhist grottos in Dazu. I admit that by this point I was getting pretty tired, and sick as well, so I wasn't too enthusiastic about this stop.
But, again, I was happily surprised.
Another UNESCO Heritage Site, the carvings at Baodingshan are between 800 and 1100 years old and they draw from Buddhist, Daoist and Confucian influences.
It was a gray drizzly day but we were lucky enough to not get rained on, and the moisture in the air gave everything a Japanese garden feeling, as you can tell a bit from these wet stone stairs.
