Naxi Music Research Institute
Lijiang, China
March 9, 2003
That night we got a rare treat -- a performance by the Naxi Music Research Institute, conducted by Mr. Xuan Ke.
They perform traditional Taoist ceremonial music, played on ancient instruments and accompanied by chanting. This music was first introduced to Yunnan from mainland China during the Tang dynasty, over 1200 years ago. It has now disappeared everywhere but Yunnan. There have been great efforts made to recover the ancient music and keep it alive for future generations.
